Edward A. Hess

HessEdward Aaron Hess was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Albany, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mr. Hess obtained his high school diploma in 2005 from Bentley Upper School (Lafayette, California), his B.A. in English from Hampden-Sydney College (Hampden Sydney, Virginia) in 2009, and his Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School (Lansing, Michigan) in 2012.

During his time at Cooley, Mr. Hess completed an externship at the Lansing City Attorney’s Office, where he participated in the prosecution of criminal cases under the City of Lansing’s municipal code, and assisted with various civil litigation projects. Mr. Hess began his legal career in private practice in August, 2012, as a law clerk for attorney Bert Carrier, at the firm Bert Carrier and Associates, PLLC. Upon admission to the Bar in November, 2012, Mr. Hess began as an Associate Attorney at the same firm, until June, 2014.

From 2014, until April, 2019, Mr. Hess engaged in the private practice of law as a solo practitioner, with his home base in Lansing.  During his time in solo practice Mr. Hess maintained an active criminal defense practice during this time, including several cases that appeared in local news media. Mr. Hess considers the highlight of his time in private practice to be assisting the Law Office of Edward Zeineh, PLLC, in representing one of the municipal employee criminal defendants charged in the Flint Water Crisis.

Mr. Hess came to indigent criminal defense early in his career, by joining the Ingham County Court Appointed Counsel System as a panel attorney.  Mr. Hess has always enjoyed the practice of indigent criminal defense.  Mr. Hess chose to apply for a position as an Assistant Public Defender in order to be able to devote himself solely to the practice of indigent criminal defense.

In his personal life, Mr. Hess enjoys cooking, travelling, reading, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family. Mr. Hess is active in the Michigan Latvian community, mostly in his academic fraternity and church, and has been elected to leadership positions in both organizations.
