Recycling Do’s and Don’ts!
After a meeting with a representative of Waste Management, the Earthwise Living Committee found out that, while Leon Valley residents are diligent about recycling, we are recycling the wrong items! Our representative reported that the items being taken in are costing Waste Management more money to process than what the program can return.

The three main rules of recycling include the recycling of plastics such as bottles, jars, jugs, and tubs. For metals, its aluminum, tin, and steel cans, and for paper, please include regular paper, newspaper, paperboard, cardboard, and magazines. Boxes should be flattened, but don’t tie or bundle them. Please assure any items used for food storage have been rinsed and are clean - if an item is soiled, it most likely cannot be recycled!

Recycling Myth Busters/FAQs

Hazardous Materials
“We receive numerous calls at Public Works about what to do with household hazardous waste, such as old paint and paint thinner, and empty fertilizer, pesticide, and chemical containers. There used to be a pickup once or twice a year for these items, but that was discontinued. We called Waste Management and asked what residents of Leon Valley could do with their stuff, and we have been told that Bexar County will accept household hazardous waste from Leon Valley residents! The program, called “At Your Door”, can be used once a year by Leon Valley residents. Please visit their website at http://www.bexar.org/533/Household-Hazardous-Waste-Pickup-Program or http://wmatyourdoor.com/, or call them at 1-800-449-7587 for information on how to schedule a pickup “At Your Door”.

Annual Brush and Heavy Materials Pick Up
Leon Valley has made arrangement for Waste Management to conduct a curbside pick up of bulky items from each residential location twice each year.  A notice is mailed to each residential customer of Waste Management before each of the scheduled pick-ups to establish the rules for pick up and reminding the customer of this opportunity.
